An overview of the major school of thoughts within the field of personality theory, presenting a variety of theoretical and practical issues involved in the scientific study and understanding of personality formation and dynamic.

The key theorists and various concepts used to explain behavior were highlighted, along with the strengths and limitations of the different theoretical approaches. Furthermore, it also discusses the development of each theory as well as its personality construct, historical and cultural context, several research methods applied in the empirical studies and investigations of personality, and a set of scientific criteria used to assess the current status of a theory.

Due to the emergence of conflicting viewpoints, it clearly indicates that there is no cohesive theory that can explain behavior across the full range of life situations. Therefore, theories of personality are being evaluated on the basis of scientific criteria and by ways in which theorists conceptualized human personality, in order to decide which of these theories have merit and are worthy of continuing scientific investigations.
